Using Gizmo5 For Audience Feedback

Gizmo5 VoIPGizmo5 is an internet softphone (VoIP) application that allows free computer to computer conference calls. Although similar to Skype, it has two differences that make it useful for a Filthy Noises concert - the audience can call into a conference call without needing to be called from the organiser and there’s no artificial difference between a conference and a ‘cast.

If you’d like to hear sounds of audience reaction while performing on Filthy Noises, get a copy of Gizmo5, set up a conference number and invite your audience to dial-in. Feed the sound from the conference to your monitor mix and mute you feed to Gizmo5.

If you’re listening to a performer, and they’ve setup a conference number, dial in using Gizmo5 then cheer, clap and whistle to give the artist a lift. The virtual concert is here!

Two-way broadcasting...

    How it works…

  • The artist performs in their studio, feeding the sound to their PC running an Icecast server. (1)
  • The Icecast stream is fed to Filthy Noises’ relay server. (2)
  • The audience connects to Filthy Noises’ web server, choosing the Main Stage page. (3)
  • The audience listen through their stereo or a multimedia headset. (4)
  • The audience reaction is picked up by the headset microphone or a microphone placed nearby and fed to the Gizmo5 softphone application. (5)
  • The softphone is connected to a conference call on the Gizmo5 server. (6)
  • The conference call was established by the artist before they started performing and they publicise the number during their performance. (7)
  • The artist mixes a little audience feedback into their monitor. Just enough to hear it, not enough to echo. (8)
